Principle
- Yeast Malt Broth is formulated as per Wickerham (1951) for the isolation and cultivation of yeasts, molds, and other aciduric microorganisms. Media is composed of peptone, yeast extract, malt extract, and dextrose.
- Peptone serves as a source of nitrogen and essential nutrients. Yeast extracts provide vitamin B complex nutrients and other growth factors. Malt extract serves as a source of carbon.
- Dextrose is a carbohydrate and energy source. To increase the selectivity, the media can be fortified by the addition of sterile 10% HCl, tartaric acid, or 10% citric acid.
- Alternatively, antibiotics (penicillin 20U/ml or streptomycin to a final concentration of 40 mg/ml) can be added. The acidified medium should not be reheated.
