Principle
- Yeast extract malt agar is composed of peptone, yeast extract, malt extract, dextrose, and agar. Peptone is the source of nitrogen, amino acids, and trace nutrients.
- Yeast extract provides nitrogen, carbon, vitamins, and growth factors. Malt extract is a complex source of carbon.
- Dextrose is a simple carbohydrate. Agar is the solidifying agent. Low pH of medium favors the growth of yeast, molds, and aciduric microorganism. The selectivity of media can be increased by the addition of organic acids or antibiotics.
- The commonly used acids are lactic acid and citric acids. The antibiotics are used in concentrations of 20-40 µg/ml.
