Principle
- Modified tryptone soya broth is composed of tryptone, soy peptone, dextrose, sodium chloride, dipotassium phosphate, bile salts, and novobiocin.
- Tryptone and soy peptone provide nitrogen and other essential nutrients. Dextrose is a carbon source and serves as the energy source for optimum growth. Sodium chloride maintains osmotic balance, while di-potassium phosphate is a buffering agent. Bile salts inhibit gram-positive bacteria.
- The novobiocin is added to increase the selectivity for Escherichia coli associated with food-borne illness, it inhibits associated microorganisms.
