Principle
Potato dextrose agar is a weakly selective medium for fungi due to its high sugar content and acidic pH. The media is composed of potato infusion and dextrose. The potato infusion provides necessary nutrients for pigment production and mycelium development, specifically in the Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Fusarium species. Dextrose serves as a carbon source and promotes luxuriant fungal growth. As per JP, the selectivity of media can be increased by adding antibacterial antibiotics like benzylpenicillin (0.10 g/l), chloramphenicol (50 mg/l), or tetracyclines (0.10 g/l) after sterilization and prior to use.
