Principle
- Sabouraud dextrose agar is used for the cultivation of yeasts, molds, and aciduric bacteria.
- Medium is consisting of peptone, dextrose monohydrate, chloramphenicol and cycloheximide, and agar.
- The peptone provides carbonaceous, nitrogenous compounds, long-chain amino acids, vitamins, and other essential growth nutrients in addition that the dextrose monohydrate serves as an energy source.
- Agar is used as a solidifying agent. Chloramphenicol and Cycloheximide inhibit a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and some saprophytic and pathogenic fungi making the medium selective for dermatophytes.
