Principle
- Nutrient Veg broth is the basic medium used for the cultivation and maintenance of fastidious microorganisms, by enriching with serum or blood and is also used for purity checking before biochemical or serological testing.
- The nutrient Veg broth is composed of vegetable peptones to avoid Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy risk associated with animal peptone.
- It consists of Veg peptone, Veg extract, and yeast extract providing the necessary nitrogen compounds, carbon, vitamins, and also some trace ingredients necessary for the growth of bacteria.
- Sodium chloride maintains the osmotic equilibrium of the medium. The media can be fortified with different biological fluids such as horse or sheep blood, serum; egg yolk, etc. making it suitable for the cultivation of related fastidious organisms.
Use:
The general purpose medium recommended for the cultivation of less fastidious microorganisms can be enriched with blood or other biological fluids.
