Principle
- Endo agar is recommended by APHA for the microbiological examination of water and wastewater, dairy products, and food products. The media is composed of peptone, lactose, Dipotassium phosphate, sodium sulfite, basic fuchsin, and agar.
- Peptone is the source of nitrogenous substances and other essential growth nutrients for organisms. Lactose is a carbon source and phosphate acts as a buffering agent. Sodium sulphite and basic fuchsin are selective agent inhibit the growth of gram-positive bacteria.
- Coliforms give pink color colonies due to lactose fermentation while lactose non-fermenters produce colourless colonies.
|
Use: Recommended for the presumptive and confirmation of members of the coliform from clinical and non-clinical samples.
