Principle
-
Malassezia is lipophilic yeast that commences in areas rich in sebaceous glands of the human skin and other warm-blooded animals. Dixons’ agar is consisting of malt extract, peptone, bile desiccated, tween 40, and glycerol mono-oleate.
- Malt extract provides essential nutrients due to their richness and nutrient balance, especially for the cultivation of fastidious microorganisms. Peptone is a source of carbon, nitrogen, vitamins, and minerals. The low and acidic pH favors the growth of yeast and molds and inhibits contaminating bacteria. Since used for the isolation, cultivation, and maintenance of yeast and molds.
- In vitro, the growth of M. furfur is stimulated by natural oils or other fatty substances. Tween 40 and monooleate complex is a source of fatty acids required for the growth of M. furfur.
