Acridine Orange (AO) is a tricyclic heteroaromatic fuel that can label DNA and RNA, and is a heterochromatic fluorescent dye.
The dye has membrane permeability and can penetrate the cell membrane to stain nuclear DNA and RNA. Therefore, AO is often used to detect DNA and RNA in cells.
